 NMSU Accreditation is via the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools, Higher Learning Commission, 230 South LaSalle Street, Suite 7-500, Chicago, IL 60604. Telephone: 800-621-7440. . NMSU has been accredited since 1926, except for a brief period in 1940-1941.  Since 1963, the institution has held preliminary to full accreditation status at the doctoral level.  At our last general visit, New Mexico State University was once again reaccredited for the maximum period possible (10 years).  At that time, the institution was commended for the contributions made by faculty and staff to teaching, research, and service; effective administration; and the significant increase in the quality and quantity of research during the past decade. Accreditation is a process that evaluates the quality of an institution’s academic programs, operations, and support services and provides a road map for improvement. Accreditation is required for an institution to receive federal funds for student financial aid and research. In the United States, the accreditation process is organized through regional accrediting commissions and member institutions.

New Mexico State University College of Engineering Baccalaureate Degree programs in Civil, Chemical, Electrical and Computer, Engineering Physics, Industrial, Mechanical, and Surveying Engineering are accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET (date of first accreditation: 1938).

The Civil Engineering Technology, Electronics & Computer Engineering Technology, Information Engineering Technology, and Mechanical Engineering Technology programs are accredited by the Engineering Technology Accreditation Commission (ETAC) of ABET,  www.abet.org

A Land-Grant Institution

The designation as New Mexico’s land-grant university under the Morrill Act has shaped NMSU since the late 1880s. NMSU has been dedicated to New Mexico’s diverse population for more than a century, transforming lives through three main pursuits: teaching, research and public service.

 

New Mexico State University is a comprehensive state-funded land-grant institution of higher learning.  Overall responsibility for the university resides in an autonomous Board of Regents (BOR) appointed by the governor of the state and confirmed by the state Senate. The BOR delegates authority for the internal management of the institution to the president of NMSU with the assistance of a Provost. The faculty elects a Faculty Senate, which has legislative jurisdiction over policies affecting the academic mission of the university. New Mexico State University is dedicated to teaching, research, and service at the undergraduate and graduate levels. NMSU is a NASA Space Grant College, a Hispanic-serving institution, is home to the only Honors College in New Mexico, and has gained its second national recognition as a military-friendly institution. NMSU has been designated a Military Friendly school since 2010.

NMSU provides learning opportunities to a diverse population of students and community members at five campuses, a satellite learning center in Albuquerque, cooperative extension offices located in each of New Mexico’s 33 counties, 13 research and science centers, and through distance education methods of delivery.

There are six programs located within the ETSE department.  ETSE is one of seven academic departments within the College of Engineering.   Engineering, in turn, is one of seven undergraduate academic colleges within New Mexico State University.  The organization of the entire institution is shown in figures below.

 What does it mean to be an ABET Inc. accredited program?

ABET Inc. accreditation means quality.

ABET Inc. accreditation is assurance that a college or university program meets the quality standards established by the profession for which it prepares its students. For example, an accredited engineering program must meet the quality standards set by the engineering profession. An accredited computer science program must meet the quality standards set by the computing profession. The quality standards accreditation requires are set by the ABET Inc. professions themselves. This is made possible by the collaborative efforts of many different professional and technical societies. These societies and their members work together through ABET Inc. to develop the standards, and they provide the professionals who evaluate the programs to make sure they meet those standards.
