Mechanical Engineering Technology (MET)

MET students learn theory and application in the fields of manufacturing, product design and development, power systems, machinery, and fluid technology. Our students take courses in mechanisms and machines, computer aided modeling, heat transfer, and instrumentation, to name a few. They seek jobs in the design and testing of tools, engines, machines, and other mechanical devices. Mechanical Engineering Technology is one of the broadest engineering technology disciplines. Our Mechanical Engineering Technology students also learn by designing and racing mini-baja cars, designing and constructing machines to help our farmers, and building systems in other countries.

Mechanical engineering technology is concerned with the implementation of current mechanical engineering practices. Mechanical engineering technologists apply basic knowledge of mathematics and engineering science to the solution of design problems and to the operation and testing of engineering and mechanical systems. Individuals can enter the field with either a two-year associates of a four-year baccalaureate degree.

The growing demand for modern and complex industrial machinery, machine tools, and computer-controlled processes makes the employment outlook excellent for mechanical engineering technologists. Positions are available in power generation, machine design, energy conservation, manufacturing operations, project planning, production supervision, plant operations, quality assurance, and technical sales and services. The occupational growth rate for mechanical engineering technologists is good and should provide excellent career opportunities.

The Mechanical Engineering Technology program is accredited by the Technology Accreditation Commission (TAC) of ABET, 111 Market Place, Suite 1050, Baltimore, MD21202-4012, telephone: (410) 347-7700.
